Established 1974
Metros was the 7th team entered into the South Queensland Touch Football Association (SQTFA) in 1974. It was started by Don Bateson.
At the time, Don lived in New Farm, Brisbane, and one of his neighbour’s was Leigh Barker, organiser and captain of Dairy Cows. One day Leigh told Don about playing Touch Football at Balmoral State School on a Sunday morning, and that he should consider starting a team as there were only 6 teams playing at the time.
Don quickly scraped a team together from relatives and his workplace, Metropolitan Permanent Building Society, for their first game on 24th March 1974. The team was aptly named Metros.
At that time, teams simply wore footy shorts and singlets. No shoes. Many manly colours were already taken, so Don purchased some Bond’s singlets and dyed them pink.
It wasn’t easy getting 8 players for the first game and so many of the team were brothers or brothers-in-law, including Don Bateson, Ross Bateson, Gavin Bateson, Peter Allen and Greg Moroney. Non-relatives were Gerry Connor, Alan Monaghan, Don Higgins, Col Mullins.
We played in bare feet on a full ground, and every player had to contribute 50 cents each week, which went to the referee.
In that first game, Metros defeated United 7-6. Yeah.
The rest of the season was not so good:
Dairy Cows d. Metros 15-4.
George St Giants d. Metros 13-5.
Black Scum d. Metros 25-6.
Hawkes d Metros 12-7.
Medicos d Metros 15-5.

Chalkees d. Metros 28-1. (a record loss in touch?)
United d. Metros 15-9.
Dairy Cows d Metros 15-6
George St Giants d. Metros 9-4.
Black Scum d. Metros 19-5.
Hawkes d Metros 13-4.
Medicos d Metros 17-3.

George St Giants d. Metros 11-10.
Black Scum d. Metros 19-8.

Chalkees had entered the completion for the first game of the second round. They beat Metros in perhaps a record score: 28-1, such was their level of fitness and skill.
Metros only ever fielded one team, played until 1982 mainly in lower divisions. Metros was a more social side than a group of top sportsmen, but enjoyed every moment of playing in the inaugural years of touch football in Brisbane.
1975 Metros finished 11th of 12 teams.
1976 In Division 2, Metros finished 10th of 12 teams.
1977 In Division 3, Metros finished 6th of 11 teams.
